Email vs. Phone Call vs. Face-to-Face

I recently heard from a client and friend, Colin, who asked me to share some thoughts on when it is more appropriate to use the phone rather than email. We did some hard thinking about this, and actually expanded Colin’s question to include face-to-face meetings. So here’s the question to ponder… when is email the correct tool to communicate? When is the phone more appropriate? And when does a face-to-face make the most sense?

Give it some thought and share your thoughts with us. Want to hear our thoughts? Listen below:

Great pod cast! Good information. Let me offer you an additional thought. I have been blind for most of my life and have made my living in sales. Obviously, seeing the reaction of people in a face to face meeting has had no value to me. What I have focused on is tone and “listening between the words”. I seem to be able to pick up the same reactions my sighted counterparts do from body language.

I also wonder if body language doesn’t interrupt the thought patterns of sighted persons making a presentation. When communicating, we have a specific direction we are taking the negotiation or communication. Reactions viewed may interrupt that process and thus the flow of the direction of the conversation. I have been told by persons observing me when closing a deal that they have seen some interesting things. Primarily when discussing the value, a client may make negative facial expressions or body movements. Unaware of this, without hesitants, I continue my presentation of the value of the product. My sighted observers indicated that they might have stopped and changed directions.

Just a thought. Just another way of making a phone meeting effective.
